Wild carrot typically emerges as a striking biennial. In its first year, it forms a rosette of finely textured, pinnately divided leaves up to 8 inches (20 cm) long. The second-year growth includes a stout, branched stem topped by umbrella-like clusters of small white flowers, each cluster measuring 3-4 inches (7.5-10 cm) across. Upon closer examination, a single dark purplish flower can often be found at the center of these clusters. The plant can reach heights of 3-4 feet (about 1 meter), with flowers blooming from late spring to early fall.
