Optimal Temperature and Humidity Levels
The Common coconut palm thrives in warm, humid conditions. Indoors, maintain a temperature of at least 18°C (65°F). The plant also prefers high humidity, around 50-70%. Use a humidifier or place a tray of water and pebbles near the plant to increase humidity levels.
Watering Practices
During winter, the Common coconut palm will require less frequent watering compared to the growing season. Water the palm when the top 2.5 cm (1 inch) of soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot, a common issue with palms indoors.
Fertilization Needs
Reduce fertilization during the winter months when the plant's growth slows down. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month, but at half the strength recommended on the package to avoid over-fertilization.
Light Requirements
The Common coconut palm needs plenty of light even during winter. Place it in the brightest spot available, preferably near a south-facing window. If natural light is insufficient, consider using grow lights to supplement and ensure the plant receives at least 6-8 hours of light per day.
