Preparing the Plant
Start by cutting down the foliage to about 15 cm (6 inches) above the ground. This helps focus the plant’s energy on the tubers and makes it easier to handle.
Digging Up Tubers
Carefully dig around the tubers using a spade, being cautious not to damage them. Loosen the soil and gently lift the clump of tubers out of the ground.
Cleaning and Drying Tubers
Once the tubers are dug up, shake off excess soil and rinse them lightly if needed. Allow them to dry for a few days in a cool, dry place. This helps prevent rot during storage.
Storage Methods
Place the cleaned and dried tubers in a box filled with sand, sawdust, or peat moss. Store the box in a cool, dark place where temperatures remain between 4-10°C (40-50°F). Consider labeling each tuber with its variety for easy identification.
Replanting in Spring
In early spring, after the last frost has passed, you can replant the tubers. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. Plant the tubers about 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) deep and water them thoroughly.
