How to Prune Sandalwood?
(Santalum album)
Sandalwood, also known as White sandalwood
Renowned for its aromatic heartwood, sandalwood thrives with careful pruning to maintain health and vigor. Prune during winter dormancy to minimize stress and enhance shape. Remove dead or diseased branches, thin overcrowded areas, and shape young plants to promote a strong structure. Pruning encourages new growth, potentially improving oil quality in the heartwood. Given its slow growth, each cut should be deliberate to prevent excess foliage loss and safeguard future harvests.

What Tools Do I Need to Prune Sandalwood?

Hand Pruners
Ideal for making clean cuts on branches under 1 inch in diameter, appropriate for shaping sandalwood and removing small, unwanted twigs or branches.
Loppers
Equipped with long handles, they provide leverage to cut through branches 1 to 2 inches thick, which is beneficial for reaching into sandalwood's canopy and cutting slightly larger stems.
Pruning Saw
Used for branches over 2 inches thick that cannot be handled with hand pruners or loppers, especially for mature sandalwood trees where thicker branches need removal.
Hedge Shears
Useful for shaping sandalwood if grown as a hedge, to maintain a uniform appearance by trimming soft foliage and small branches.
Pole Pruner
Allows gardeners to reach higher branches without using a ladder, making it safer and more efficient to prune taller sandalwood specimens.
Garden Gloves
Protect hands from the sandalwood's rough bark and potential sap during the pruning process. Durable gloves are a must-have for handling pruning tools and providing grip.
Sharpening Tool
Keeps the blades of pruning tools sharp for clean and efficient cuts, which is crucial to prevent damage and disease in sandalwood.

How to Prune Sandalwood

Preparation
Gather the appropriate pruning tools, such as clean and sharp pruning shears, loppers, and gloves. Sterilize the tools with a solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water to prevent the spread of disease.
Identification
Carefully inspect sandalwood for any dead or diseased branches. Look for signs such as discoloration, brittleness, and lack of leaves or bark as indicators of dead branches. Diseased branches may have abnormal growths, wounds, or discolorations.
Cleansing cut
Prune dead branches by making clean cuts at a 45-degree angle just above a healthy bud, growing point, or lateral branch. Ensure cuts are made to promote healing and discourage water accumulation that could lead to decay.
Disease management
Remove diseased branches by cutting them back to healthy tissue. If the entire branch is diseased, cut it off at the base near the main trunk. Be sure to avoid tearing the bark by making smooth, controlled cuts.
Disinfect tools
After each cut, especially when removing diseased material, disinfect pruning tools with the bleach solution to prevent the spread of disease to other parts of sandalwood or to other plants.

Common Pruning Mistakes with Sandalwood

Over pruning
Removing too much foliage at once can stress sandalwood, reducing its ability to photosynthesize and potentially leading to disease or poor growth.
Blunt tools
Using dull pruning tools can cause jagged cuts that are more prone to infection. Sharp, clean tools make precise cuts that heal more quickly.
Tearing branches
Forceful or improper removal of branches can create larger wounds and expose more of the plant's cambium, increasing the risk of disease or pest infestation.
Flush cutting
Pruning branches flush against the trunk can remove the branch collar, impairing the sandalwood's natural healing process and making the site more susceptible to infections.
Neglecting sanitation
Failing to sanitize tools between cuts can spread disease from infected parts of the sandalwood to healthy ones. Always clean tools, especially when disease is present.

Common Pruning Tips for Sandalwood

Selective pruning
Carefully select which branches to prune, focusing on dead or diseased wood, as well as crossed or rubbing branches that can damage each other and impede sandalwood's growth.
Angled cuts
Make cuts at a 45-degree angle about a quarter inch above outward-facing buds, to promote water runoff and new growth in a desirable direction.
Branch collar
When removing larger branches, cut just outside the branch collar — the swollen area of trunk tissue that forms around the base of a branch — to help sandalwood heal more effectively.
Equipped knowledge
Prior to pruning, understand the specific growth patterns and requirements of sandalwood to avoid cutting off potentially productive wood that could yield flowers or more foliage.
Consistency
Monitor sandalwood regularly for pruning needs, as consistent light pruning is preferable to severe, less frequent cuts which can significantly stress the plant.
