From Ground: First, water the dwarf veratrum to dampen the soil and reduce root stress. Then, use a spade to dig a generous circle around the plant, going deep enough to include the majority of roots. Gently pry the plant from the ground with a lifting motion and be ready to transfer it promptly.
From Pot: Water the dwarf veratrum well, then turn the pot sideways and tap gently to loosen. Support the plant with one hand while you carefully slide it out with the root ball intact. If resistant, use a garden trowel around the inside edge to help release it.
From Seedling Tray: Water the seedlings first to ensure the soil sticks to the roots. Use a trowel or your fingers to gently lift each plant ensuring that you bring along as much of the root system as possible.
