Is Sweet flag toxic to humans?
Sweet flag is a mildly toxic plant that contains small amounts of alkylbenzenes, a carcinogenic substance that may cause some forms of cancer in large doses. The risk is extremely low due to the low amount, but the plant contains additional toxins in the leaves, stem, and flower. These toxins can irritate sensitive skin. Rash, redness, and swelling are common side effects. Ingesting the plant can cause more severe symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The toxins can also work as a depressant on the central nervous system if a large amount of the plant is ingested. Individuals taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor are the most at risk for severe side effects.
