Is Carob tree toxic to humans?
Most of the carob tree is inedible but relatively harmless. Carob pods are a tasty and nutritious treat for most people, although some have an allergy to carob that is triggered by the pods and the products made from them. Allergy symptoms include nausea, vomiting, hives, and potentially anaphylactic shock. For non-allergic people, carob can still present problems if you eat too much. It lowers blood sugar and insulin, which can cause problems for those with blood sugar issues. It also can cause unwanted weight loss through this same mechanism. The amount needed to cause these problems is much smaller in small children, so be careful. If someone shows allergy symptoms, they should stop eating carob. If the symptoms are severe or they eat a great deal of carob, a doctor's advice and possibly an emergency room visit may be needed.
