Is Purging croton toxic to humans?
Purging croton is a dangerously toxic tree. All parts of the plant are poisonous, most notably the fruit which is a small green berry, which has a slight chance of being mistaken for edible berries. Poisoning by skin or eye contact is more probable and results in blistering and dermatitis, and in the case of eye contact keratoconjunctivitis. When eaten symptoms include a burning feeling in the mouth and esophagus, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. Dizziness, delirium, headaches, convulsions, and death can also result. The toxic agents in Croton tiglium are phorbol, phorbol esters, and crotin.
