Purging croton
The purging croton's interesting name is thought to come from the Greek word tiglos, meaning "diarrhea", which may be thanks to the toxic compounds that cause "purging" bowel movements in humans. Humans were able to use this to their advantage, however, by poisoning arrow tips with the bark of Croton tiglium and using the toxic seeds to kill and catch fish.

Weed Control

Purging croton is an extremely poisonous weed that poses a threat to forests in both the temperate and tropical world. Though it is not strictly invasive and sometimes even grown purposefully, its spread causes many problems, as it is toxic for fish and mammals, which can drastically affect local ecosystems. Purging croton can grow up to 12 meters tall and thrives in nearly every environment, allowing it to outcompete native species for sunlight and nutrients. Though its poison repels insects, it is a significant carrier of viruses that can threaten nearby plants and animals. Remove manually while wearing gloves and long sleeves, or suppress with herbicides.
