Is Dumb canes toxic to cat?
The sap inside dumb canes can be mildly to severely poisonous to cats. The entire plant contains toxins called insoluble calcium oxalates and proteolytic enzymes. They can irritate skin and cause harm if swallowed. The symptoms that follow ingestion include swelling and burning of the mouth, tongue, and lips, vomiting, drooling, and difficulty swallowing. Although rarely fatal, the condition can last for two weeks, so it's advised to seek medical attention to relieve the symptoms.
Is Dumb canes toxic to dog?
A common houseplant, dumb canes (genus Dieffenbachia) can be moderately toxic to dogs. All parts of the plant contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals in the sap. Calcium oxalate crystals can cause pain, irritation, and swelling around the mouth and throat when eaten. This is often accompanied by difficulty swallowing, a pawing at the mouth, a lack of appetite, diarrhea, and/or vomiting. Topical exposure to calcium oxalate can cause redness and itchiness on the skin. Thankfully, its extreme distastefulness usually means that dogs only eat very small quantities of this plant.
