Is Greenspot nightshade toxic to humans?
All parts of greenspot nightshade are classified as toxic, although the ripe berries, which are most likely to be consumed by children because of their black or purple color, are typically harmless. Symptoms of poisoning occur within six hours of ingestion of any other part of the plant, including unripe berries, and include headache, nausea, and diarrhea. More severe symptoms can follow and can result in death from cardiac arrhythmia and circulatory and respiratory failure. The most poisonous part of the plant is the unripened green berry, but all parts of the plant contain the active toxin solanine. Since the plant's berries have a similar coloration to some edible fruits, there is some risk of accidental ingestion.
