Found from central California to Mexico, greenspot nightshade is an agricultural weed containing poisonous alkaloids. Though not invasive, it poses a problem for farmers in its native range, as it frequently grows in pastures, orchards, and crop fields. It is toxic to grazing animals and hosts a range of pests that threaten many types of produce. Greenspot nightshade can also grow up to 1.8 m tall, allowing it to obscure more desirable garden species. However, greenspot nightshade is easily outcompeted by other plants, so it is advised to grow favorable species near the problem area to reduce their growth. Herbicides are also an effective control method.
