Toxicity

All parts of greenspot nightshade are toxic, especially unripe green berries. Symptoms of poisoning include headache, nausea, diarrhea, and more severe effects like cardiac arrhythmia and respiratory failure. Ripe berries, though typically harmless, may be consumed by children due to their color. The plant contains solanine, posing a risk of accidental ingestion due to its similarity to edible fruits.

Weed Control

Found from central California to Mexico, greenspot nightshade is an agricultural weed containing poisonous alkaloids. Though not invasive, it poses a problem for farmers in its native range, as it frequently grows in pastures, orchards, and crop fields. It is toxic to grazing animals and hosts a range of pests that threaten many types of produce. Greenspot nightshade can also grow up to 1.8 m tall, allowing it to obscure more desirable garden species. However, greenspot nightshade is easily outcompeted by other plants, so it is advised to grow favorable species near the problem area to reduce their growth. Herbicides are also an effective control method.
How to Control It
Best weeding time: before fruition
  1. Removal: You can remove this weed by gloved hand or by tool in early autumn or early spring each year. Due to it being perennial, you need to completely clean out its root system to prevent it from regrowth.
  2. Chemical control: If the weed is too much to pull out, herbicides will be helpful for its eradication.
  3. Mowing: Mow twice by the end of spring each year and repeatedly do so for two consecutive years, and the spread of the weed could be contained. For weed on larger-sized land, machine mowing is recommended.
