Is Purple nightshade toxic to humans?
Poisoning from purple nightshade is most likely to occur from accidental ingestion of the plant. All parts of purple nightshade are toxic to humans when eaten, and the unripened fruit is the most toxic part. Poisoning can be fatal and may affect the gastrointestinal tract (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), cardiovascular system (tachycardia, arrhythmia, and low blood pressure), and central nervous system (delirium, paralysis, coma, agitation, and convulsions). Despite its danger, purple nightshade can sometimes be encountered as an ornamental cultivated plant in gardens. Children may be more susceptible to accidentally eating this plant due to its attractive flowers.
