Is Organ pipe cactus toxic to humans?
Organ pipe cactus is not in itself toxic, but it strongly resembles the toxic San Pedro cactus, and it can be very difficult for even a native to the region to tell them apart. For this reason, children should be kept away from it. San Pedro causes vomiting, hallucinations, and sometimes worse symptoms, and so it isn't worth the risk to eat any part of organ pipe cactus. In addition, this cactus is covered with vicious thorns which force anyone tending the plant to wear thick gloves and protective clothing. Unfortunately, its fruits are enticing in smell and appearance, meaning that they can attract kids, who then get stabbed. A serious encounter with organ pipe cactus spines needs the intervention of a doctor. Any potential exposure to San Pedro cactus, especially with accompanying nausea and altered consciousness, requires a trip to the emergency room.
