Is Coontie toxic to humans?

If ingested, coontie can harm humans. Symptoms are generally moderate, but they can become more severe in some cases, even becoming life-threatening. The toxins in this plant, which might affect the central nervous system, are mainly found in the roots and seeds. Symptoms induced by eating the seeds are vomiting, stomachache, bloody stool, diarrhea, excessive thirst, and bruising. In the worst cases, liver failure or death can occur. Some people might eat the roots as a wild edible, without properly preparing them or being aware of the toxins they contain.

Is Coontie toxic to cat?

The leaves, seeds, and nuts from the coontie can cause severe damage to a cat's liver when ingested, and all parts of the plant are poisonous to some degree. Symptoms can show up within fifteen minutes after ingestion and include drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. It's important to seek medical attention for your animal if you suspect s/he has ingested any part of this plant.

Is Coontie toxic to dog?

Coonties are highly toxic to dogs - you should seek immediate veterinary attention if you believe your dog ate any part of this plant. The seeds have the highest concentration of toxins, although all parts of this plant contain them. When ingested, coontie often causes gastrointestinal distress, including vomiting and/or diarrhea, as well as weakness, a loss of appetite, and extreme thirst. If one or more seeds are eaten, severe liver damage, coma, or death can result.
