False mvule is a monotypic genus. It is a large tree, growing to 25 to 40 m tall, with a trunk up to 40 cm diameter, often buttressed at the base, with pale grey bark. The leaves are elliptic to obovate. The African tree bears larger fruit than Asian and Polynesian populations. The edible fruit is a red or purple drupe 2 cm in diameter. False mvule has a remarkably wide distribution in tropical regions.
Water:
False mvule is drought-tolerant, thriving in arid climates with minimal moisture. It needs watering every 2-3 weeks, allowing soil to dry completely. Its flowering depends on water availability, reflecting seasonal rains in its native xeric landscapes.
Propagation:
Propagation of false mvule involves seed sowing and cuttings under warm temperatures and high humidity. Fresh seeds are preferred, requiring scarification. For cuttings, use semi-hardwood in warm seasons. Follow steps to ensure success: scarify seeds, provide humidity, root cuttings in perlite and peat, and harden off before transplanting.
