Katsura are a genus containing just two species of tree, the tall-growing Cercidiphyllum japonicum, and the shorter Cercidiphyllum magnificum. The leaves produce a distinctively rich cake-like aroma that is strongest when they turn brown in fall. These are popular ornamental shade trees for their elegant heart-shaped leaves and blaze of fall leaf colors. In Asia, the tree's wood is used to make boards for the popular game Go.
