Glory pea
Also known as: Parrot's bill
Glory pea (Clianthus puniceus) is an outstanding ornamental plant much-loved for its ostentatious red flowers, which have a complex shape often likened to a lobster claw or parrot's beak. Sadly this plant is now critically endangered in its single natural habitat and there is now only one known example in the wild. The scientific name puniceus means "blood red," in reference to the flowers.

Water: Glory pea, native to New Zealand, prefers well-drained soils and tolerates short dry periods. It benefits from weekly watering to support vibrant growth and prolific flowering, thriving outdoors in moist conditions with adequate rainfall.
Fertilize: For optimal growth, glory pea requires balanced nutrition. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a diluted, balanced formula; reduce to quarterly in dormancy. Avoid overfeeding, and maintain even soil moisture to enhance nutrient absorption while monitoring for deficiency or excess.
Pruning: Glory pea flourishes with proper pruning, which includes removing dead branches and thinning for light. Prune in late spring post-flowering to enhance health and blooms. Regular pruning maintains shape and size, ensuring glory pea's beauty and vitality across seasons.
Propagation: Glory pea features striking red flowers and can be propagated via cuttings. Ensure cuttings contain leaf nodes and use well-draining soil. High humidity and stable temperatures are crucial for rooting success. Monitor moisture levels to prevent rot and dehydration, promoting healthy plant growth.
