Hydrangea arguta (Hydrangea arguta) is the only hydrangea native to Hawaii, where it is known as kanawao. A medium-sized shrub, hydrangea arguta produces clusters of flowers in a wide array of colors from blue to yellow to pink. Water:
Hydrangea arguta requires significant watering, ideally at least three times a week, with increased frequency in dry or hot conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist, ensuring no water accumulation. Adjust watering based on seasonal needs, and supplement quickly if hydrangea arguta leaves show signs of wilting.
Fertilize:
Bigleaf hydrangea requires fertilization multiple times in spring to early summer, while panicle and smooth hydrangeas need it once in spring. Oakleaf hydrangea is fertilized twice during spring to early summer. Iron deficiency in hydrangea arguta causes yellowing leaves; amend soil or use foliar sprays to enhance iron uptake.
Pruning:
Pruning methods for hydrangea arguta vary by type. Bigleaf and oakleaf hydrangeas bloom on old branches and require pruning in early summer. 'Endless Summer' allows year-round pruning. Smooth and panicle hydrangeas bloom on new growth, with flexible pruning schedules, but avoid spring pruning to protect budding.
