Lovage is an erect, herbaceous, perennial plant the flowers being produced in umbels at the top of the stems, growing to 1.8 to 2.5 m tall. The stems and leaves are shiny glabrous green to yellow-green. The larger basal leaves are tripinnate, with broad triangular to rhomboidal, acutely pointed leaflets with a few marginal teeth; the stem leaves are smaller, and less divided with few leaflets. The flowers are yellow to greenish-yellow, produced in globose umbels. The fruit is a dry two-parted schizocarp. This genus includes 1 species.
Water:
Lovage originates from southern Europe, thriving in moist conditions. While moderately drought-tolerant, it prefers consistent moisture, ideally watered weekly for lush growth. As an outdoor herb, it benefits from natural rainfall, enhancing its vigorous growth and flavor profile.
Propagation:
Propagating lovage involves seed sowing, root cuttings, and division. Key requirements include bright light, temperatures of 15-20°C (59-68°F), and well-drained soil. Seed viability diminishes over time. Division is the easiest method. For seeds: sow in spring, maintain moisture, and transplant seedlings after frost.
