Notholithocarpus are a genus of broadleaf trees. The genus is comprised of only one North American tree named the Tanoak which has been compared to both chestnuts and true oaks. Its acorns have been consumed by indigenous North American tribes as a food staple in foodstuffs such as bread.
Water:
Notholithocarpus prefers conditions similar to its native dry habitat and is drought-tolerant, needing water every 2-3 weeks. Deep soaking encourages root growth. It's usually grown outdoors and benefits from mulch to retain moisture during hot seasons.
Propagation:
Notholithocarpus propagation involves seeds, requiring full sun, moderate temperatures, and well-draining acidic soil. Seed stratification is needed for dormancy. Steps include collecting seeds, stratifying for 6-8 weeks, sowing in moist soil, and transplanting after two growth seasons. Difficulty is moderate, with germination challenges.
