Proso millet
Also known as: Common millet, Kashfi millet
Proso millet (*Panicum miliaceum*) is a fast-growing grass cultivated around the world for its grain. It blooms from summer to fall, followed by seed production with a seed replacing each floret of the blossom. It grows in full sun with moist to dry soil conditions and attracts beetles, grasshoppers, aphids and moths.

Weed Control

Proso millet originates from East Asia, specifically China and Eastern Siberia. It's considered a weed due to its aggressive growth, quick maturation, and habit of spreading quickly. These characteristics can choke out desirable plants in a garden, potentially causing damage. Also, proso millet can reproduce rapidly, for it produces a large number of seeds that have a considerable survival rate. This means they can easily and quickly infest a garden, making it difficult for other plants to compete for resources. The primary way it spreads is through its seeds. Because proso millet has a long seed viability, they can be transported by natural elements such as wind and water, or indirectly through animals. Thus, once proso millet finds a conducive environment, it sprouts and spreads its influence, becoming a stubborn weed that is hard to control.
How to Control It
The ideal season for the removal of proso millet is early spring, specifically during the initial stages of its growth. Removal is best carried out before the plant reaches its pre-flowering state, denying it the chance to produce and disperse seeds. Below are some methods of removal and control:
  1. Hand-pulling: In smaller garden areas, one effective method is simply removing the plants by hand. Ensure to wear a good pair of gardening gloves as this will protect your hands and also give you a better grip. Make sure to pull the weed from its root to prevent regrowth.
  2. Cultivation: Breaking up the soil can help expose the roots of the proso millet to light and air, interrupting its growth. Carry this out with a garden cultivator or hoe. Be careful not to disturb neighboring beneficial plants.
  3. Mulching: Cover the soil with a thick layer of mulch. This denies proso millet the light it needs to germinate and grow. You can use organic materials such as wood chips, straw, or grass clippings.
  4. Plant competition: Plant fast-growing, dense plants that can outcompete proso millet for resources. This method uses nature's own survival tactics against the weed by denying space and nutrients.
  5. Organic herbicides: Consider using organic herbicides made from natural ingredients. Apply directly onto proso millet following the instructions on the product label. Remember, timing is key, apply when proso millet is actively growing for best results.

Water: Proso millet is drought-tolerant and has moderate water needs, benefiting from weekly watering while avoiding over-saturation. It thrives outdoors, aligning its growth cycles with natural rainfall patterns for optimal hydration, minimizing the need for frequent human intervention.
Fertilize: For optimal growth and grain production in proso millet, use high phosphorus fertilizers every 4-6 weeks, following guidelines. Avoid over-fertilization to prevent excess foliage. Adjust application frequency post-flowering and use safety gear. Water the soil after fertilization to enhance nutrient uptake.
Propagation: Proso millet propagates easily through sowing in Spring. Successful propagation is indicated by seedling emergence, and optimal growth is supported by proper soil moisture and spacing.
