Pistia comprises of single species - Pistia stratiotes, also known as water lettuce. This aquatic plant can be found in almost all tropical and subtropical fresh waterways (hence the name), where it behaves as an invasive weed. Pistia floats on the water surface, forming large, impenetrable carpets and disrupting water ecosystems. To complete their life cycle, the salvinia stem-borer moth (Samea multiplicalis) and mosquitoes of the genus Mansonia need to use pistia as a host plant.
Water:
Pistia thrives in tropical water gardens, preferring high humidity and consistent moisture. It requires weekly watering and acts as an excellent hydration indicator in pond ecosystems, adapting well to its aquatic environment without needing excessive water or being highly drought-tolerant.
Propagation:
Pistia propagates easily through division, thriving in warm, water-rich environments. Ensure adequate space during replanting to avoid overcrowding. This low-difficulty propagation method is beginner-friendly; separate offsets from the mother plant with roots intact for successful establishment in aquatic settings.
