Platycarya is a genus usually treated as comprising a single species. It is a deciduous tree growing to 15 m tall. The leaves are usually pinnate with 7–15 leaflets (rarely simple, or with up to 23 leaflets), the terminal leaflet present. The flowers are catkins; the female catkins are hard and woody, superficially resembling a conifer cone with spirally arranged scales. It is native to eastern Asia in China, Korea, and Japan.
Water:
Platycarya thrives in dry environments and is drought-tolerant. It should be watered every three weeks, allowing partial soil dryness before watering. To prevent waterlogging during heavy rains, a well-draining soil composition is essential for maintaining a healthy root system.
Propagation:
Propagation of platycarya can be achieved through seeds and softwood cuttings. Seeds need 1-3 months of stratification and thrive in slightly acidic to neutral pH. Cuttings root best in warm, humid conditions, requiring consistent moisture and well-draining soil, making propagation moderately challenging.
