Portulacaria is a small genus comprised of a handful of succulent plants, some of which reach the size of large shrubs. Several species are planted ornamentally, most notable among them being Elephant Bush (P. afra). Some portulacaria are also cultivated as bonsais.
Water:
Portulacaria prefers arid conditions, thriving in low water availability and exhibiting high drought tolerance. Watering should be sparse, approximately every three weeks, to avoid overhydration. As an evergreen, it retains foliage year-round and requires less water during cooler months due to lower evapotranspiration.
Propagation:
Propagation of portulacaria primarily involves stem and leaf cuttings, requiring bright, indirect light, warm temperatures, and well-draining soil. Avoid overwatering. Cuttings are preferred over seeds for better success rates. Steps include calling the cut before planting and watering sparingly until established.
