Mountain valerian
Also known as: Round-leaved mountain valerian
The mountain valerian is a perennial herbaceous plant (hemicryptophyte). From a weakly woody, up to 15 cm long base axis, in addition to sterile leaf rosettes, there are usually clearly polygonal stems with growth heights between 30 cm and 60 cm . The opposite leaves are undivided and ovate to lanceolate, less often the upper leaves are three-lobed.

Water: Thriving in alpine habitats, mountain valerian prefers regular moisture and cool conditions. Watering weekly is ideal, but brief dryness is tolerated. Typically grown outdoors, mountain valerian adapts well to cooler climates and requires less irrigation during dormancy in colder seasons.
Fertilize: For optimal growth of mountain valerian, apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring and midsummer using a controlled-release formula. Over-fertilization can hinder blooms, so feed lightly, particularly in fall and winter. Always water mountain valerian thoroughly post-fertilization to ensure nutrient distribution and prevent root burn.
Pruning: Mountain valerian features tall clusters of white to pink flowers and aromatic foliage. Prune in early spring by cutting stems above ground to promote growth, and remove spent flower heads in late spring. Clean tools to prevent disease, ensuring more blooms and better size management.
Propagation: Mountain valerian can be propagated by sowing quality seeds for better germination rates. Surface-sow on well-draining soil, maintaining consistent moisture and warmth while avoiding waterlogging. Once seedlings are strong, they can be transplanted to individual pots or the garden.
