The welwitschia genus comprises only one species, Welwitschia mirabilis, which was first discovered by the Austrian botanist, Friedrick Welwitsch. This plant lives in extreme deserts and has a very unusual appearance; it only has roots, a stem base, and two leaves that split throughout its life. This species is protected and estimated to live for up to 1,500 years.
Water:
Welwitschia is adapted to arid environments, demonstrating high drought tolerance with watering needs of every three weeks. Suited for outdoor growth, it maximizes water retention through unique leaf structures, showcasing remarkable adaptation in desert climates.
Propagation:
Propagation of welwitschia primarily involves seed sowing due to its unique growth form. Maintain a temperature of 20-24°C, use well-draining sandy soil, and provide indirect light. Soak seeds for 12 hours, keep moist, and transplant carefully after germination, as seeds have low viability.
