Home > Question
Is red bead tree invasive?
Red bead tree is a fast-growing tree that forms symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria that help it fix nitrogen. Because of this ability, this tree is used as green manure and for soil improvement. Red bead tree was also used as a windbreak and shading plant for some ornamental plants and crops, like coffee and nutmeg. However, the use of red bead tree in agroforestry dropped significantly when it was discovered that it displays invasive behavior in tropical and subtropical regions. Red bead tree invades both natural and managed forests, disturbed sites, shrublands and roadsides. It vigorously competes for light and nutrients with native species, spreading rapidly and affecting the structure of the plant community. Red bead tree produces many seeds that are commonly dispersed by birds, but can also be spread by water and other animals. The tree can produce flowers and fruits multiple times a year, which gives it a significant advantage in invading new areas.
