Is japanese dodder invasive?
As a parasitic species, japanese dodder requires a host plant to get water and food for its survival. It attaches to the host plant via haustoria (root-like structures that allow parasitic plants and fungi to enter host's cells), and drains it of water and nutrients. Japanese dodder is typically an annual plant but also has the ability to overwinter on host plants. In warm climates, it can grow year-round. It can reproduce both via seeds and vegetatively, via stem fragments. This plant parasitizes herbs, ferns, ornamental trees, fruits, onions, potatoes, eggplants, and even tobacco and soybeans. Japanese dodder can significantly reduce yields, making it a major threat to agriculture.
