Home > Question
Is spurge laurel poisonous to pets?
Spurge laurel is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses. The toxins firstly attack the mucous membranes of the animal's mouth. Consumption of the berries, foliage, or bark of spurge laurel also causes dangerous effects on the animal's gastrointestinal system. Ingestion of spurge laurel triggers extreme diarrhea which can lead to extreme dehydration. Gastric ulcers and degenerative changes in the liver are also frequent consequences. Although all parts of the plant are poisonous, the riskiest is the brightly colored orange and red berries. This is why the spurge laurel might not be the best choice for a garden shrub if you are a pet owner, as the most often poisoning cases come from curious pets who accidentally eat the attractive berries.
