Home > Question
Is chinaberry tree poisonous to dogs?
Chinaberry tree uses its toxins as a protective mechanism against unwanted animals that try to eat its fruit. This is why animals that disperse its seeds, like birds, are mostly immune to its toxins. However, dogs, cats, and horses are sensitive to the toxic effects of this plant. Dogs are very sensitive and get poisoned quite often, so cultivating chinaberry tree should be avoided by dog owners. Horses are also very sensitive to the effects of chinaberry tree's toxins. The symptoms of poisoning can manifest if the horse eats just 0.5 % of its body weight. The effects can be fatal if the animal eats 1% of their body weight. Symptoms of poisoning are similar to the ones that manifest in humans. However, keep in mind that cats and dogs have lower body mass than an adult human, and require a lesser amount of berries to develop serious health problems.
