Redtop
Also known as: Bent couch
Redtop is a perennial grass that's native to Europe and parts of North America. The survival of rhizomes and seeds enable it to do well in response to fires, which is why the Agrostis gigantea was planted in areas that were disturbed by the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. This grass can be found in open woodland, hedgerows, roadsides, and waste ground, plus as a weed on arable land.

Distribution of Redtop

Distribution Map
Redtop has a widespread presence across multiple continents, primarily native to regions such as Europe, Asia, and North America. As a cultivated species, redtop is found across various terrains and climates, demonstrating its adaptive nature. While native to some parts of North America, it has expanded its range, considered introduced in areas of South America, Africa, and Oceania. In certain regions, redtop is sometimes thought to be invasive, where it may have an impact on ecosystems, notably in parts of North America and Africa. Despite its broad distribution, the cultivation of redtop is controlled to mitigate potential ecological effects.

Weed Control

Redtop is considered a common weed in North America, where it esacped agricultural planting areas in pastures. Now, it grows commonly as a weed along roadsides and in farm fields in North America. It is considered an invasive species that threatens native plants in Alaska and Virginia. It sequesters valuable nutrients and space from native species. In addition, it hybridizes with native species, causing the appearance of other atypical weed hybrid species. Care should be taken when planting this species as a pasture crop not to let it escape its planting area.
How to Control It
Though redtop is often cultivated, there are times when it needs to be culled and removed. The main method that is actually able to eliminate populations of redtop is the application of herbicide. Herbicides containing atrazine have been demonstrated to be extremely effective against this and other cold-season grasses while largely ignoring warm-weather species. Nevertheless, care should be taken not to apply the chemical to other plants.

Care Guide for Redtop

Water: Redtop originates from temperate regions, preferring moderate moisture levels and tolerating brief dryness. Weekly watering is essential for maintaining its vigor, particularly during the active growing season. Redtop thrives outdoors, benefiting from natural rainfall to support its growth.
Fertilize: Fertilize redtop with 1-2 inches of mulch or compost in spring, avoiding stem contact. Repeat semi-annually, reducing frequency as redtop matures. Always water post-application to ensure nutrient absorption while avoiding excess to prevent root burn and runoff, promoting healthy growth year-round.
Pruning: Redtop is a perennial grass that thrives with early spring pruning. Remove up to one-third of the dead or damaged stems using clean shears to stimulate new growth. Avoid heavy pruning during peak growth to prevent stress, ensuring the plant's health and aesthetic appeal.
Propagation: For propagating redtop, sow evenly for optimal density and ensure light contact by sowing shallowly. Avoid overcrowding with moderate seeding rates and use a fine-textured, well-draining medium. Consistent soil moisture is essential post-sowing for successful germination.
