Weed Control

Smooth hawksbeard originates from Europe, but is now widespread across North America. Classified as a weed, it proliferates rapidly due to its proficient seed production and distribution ability. In gardens, it poses a serious threat as it competes aggressively with cultivated plants for nutrients, sunlight, and space, often outperforming them due to its superior adaptability. Given its vast root system, it is incredibly difficult to eradicate completely. Add to that, each plant can produce up to 4000 seeds, each capable of effective dormancy, leading to infestations when conditions are favourable. Its seed dispersal is primarily windborne, meaning it can spread across large distances, making containment even harder. It can also spread vegetatively from root fragments, posing a continual issue for gardeners.
How to Control It
The best season to remove smooth hawksbeard is during late spring to early summer, i.e., May to June. It is most manageable when the plant is in its flowering stage but before it reaches the point of bearing seeds, as it can reproduce quite rapidly.
  1. Hand Pulling: While wearing sturdy gloves, firmly grasp smooth hawksbeard at its base and pull gently tugging upwards to remove the plant. Ensuring the entire root system is removed is critical, as any fragment can initiate new growth.
  2. Solarization: It involves using solar power to suppress smooth hawksbeard. Begin by watering the area around smooth hawksbeard to moisten the soil. Then, cover it with a clear plastic sheet and secure the edges with rocks or soil. Leave it for 6 to 8 weeks. The heat of the sun will cook the plant and its seeds, leading to their death.
  3. Smothering: Lay sheets of cardboard or several layers of newspaper over the area where smooth hawksbeard is growing. This will prevent sunlight from reaching smooth hawksbeard, thus suppressing its growth. Water the area lightly to hold the material in place and cover it with a layer of mulch.
  4. Hoeing: Regularly disturbing the soil with a hoe can control the growth of smooth hawksbeard. It should be done early in the season and continued regularly to prevent any new growth.
  5. Vinegar Spray: A household vinegar spray can be used as a natural weed killer when sprayed directly onto smooth hawksbeard. Do this on a warm, sunny day to ensure the plant absorbs the vinegar and magnify its effect.
