Globe artichoke
Also known as: French artichoke
Globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus) is a popular vegetable that has been cultivated for thousands of years in the Mediterranean region. Weed Control

Globe artichoke originates from the Mediterranean region. It's identified as a potential weed due to its vigorous growth and reproduction ability. The plant can easily spread, taking over garden spaces, and is quite challenging to eradicate once established. It's particularly harmful to gardens because its large leaves shadow smaller plants, hindering their growth. On the other hand, the plant is also grown domestically for its edible flower buds. If you decide to grow it in your garden, keep an eye out for its rapid proliferation and always monitor the area it occupies to prevent it from becoming invasive. Its primary mode of spreading is through seeds, which are dispersed by wind, animals, and even water.
How to Control It
To manage globe artichoke effectively, it's best to address weed control efforts in early spring or late winter before the plant bolts, which means before it starts producing flower stalks. Control should start before the plant reaches this reproductive phase to prevent it from spreading.
  1. Hand pulling: Carefully pull up globe artichoke by gripping the base of the plant and gently but firmly tugging to remove the entire root system. This is best done after a rain when the soil is moist, making it easier to remove the roots.
  2. Mulching: Spread a thick layer of organic mulch, such as straw or wood chips, around desired plants to suppress globe artichoke growth. The mulch will block sunlight, thus inhibiting sprouting.
  3. Mowing: Regularly mow the area where globe artichoke is growing to keep it from flowering and setting seeds. For effective control, mow down globe artichoke before it reaches 10 inches in height.
  4. Dense planting: Grow desirable plants densely to out-compete globe artichoke for space, water, and nutrients, creating a natural form of weed suppression.
  5. Edible landscaping: If you'd like to cultivate globe artichoke, plant it in controlled areas or pots to manage its spread and incorporate it into your garden design as an edible ornamental.

Soil Type
Water: Globe artichoke prefers Mediterranean-like conditions with sunny exposure and occasional moisture. It exhibits moderate drought tolerance but thrives with weekly watering. When grown outdoors, adjust supplemental watering to align with natural rainfall to promote healthy growth.
Pruning: Globe artichoke thrives with precise pruning in early to late spring, removing old foliage and dead stems for improved airflow and disease prevention. Post-harvest, remove spent flower stalks to promote new growth, ensuring enhanced vigor and pest resistance using clean, sharp tools.
Propagation: Globe artichoke propagates through division by separating healthy offsets from the main plant. Use well-draining soil and provide sufficient water for establishment. Regular monitoring for pests and diseases enhances the growth of robust globe artichoke specimens.
