Garden Use
Well-known for its cylindrical shape, deep ribs, and showy tubular flowers that appear in spring and summer, easter Lily Cactus is a popular cactus in cultivation. Although small specimens are commonly grown indoors, larger specimens are cultivated outdoors in suitable frost-free climates. It can be an excellent specimen for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and desert gardens. Whether you plant easter Lily Cactus indoors or outdoors, it mustn't be placed at the reach of children and pets, as its sharp spines can cause quite a lot of pain.
Interesting Facts
This cactus doesn't have a common Western name. The Latin name of the genus comes from Greek 'echinus', meaning 'hedgehog' or 'sea urchin' - both spiny animals. It reflects the dense cover of spines characteristic of the entire genus. The epithet 'Tubiflora' describes the tubular shape of the species' flower. Echinopsis tubiflora is endemic to Argentina, meaning it can be found only there and nowhere else in the world (at least in the wild). It is an attractive large cactus with flowers reaching the length of up to 24 cm.
