Weed Control

Small geranium is a weed plant that originated from Europe and Asia. The plant's weedy status is credited to its strong ability to regenerate and cover ground extensively. Its weed status is largely attributed to its dynamic reproductive system, which includes both sexual and asexual mechanisms. One of the most devastating features of small geranium is its capacity to produce prolific amounts of seeds. Each plant can potentially produce thousands of seeds, which are easily disseminated either by wind or water, or inadvertently by animals or humans. This ensures a rapid and extensive infestation of the weed, making it highly destructive to gardens. The weed's hardy nature allows it to flourish in diverse conditions, often outcompeting native plants for nutrients, light, and space, which eventually leads to a decrease in biodiversity.
How to Control It
The best season to remove small geranium is during the late spring or early summer, when the plant has not yet reached its flowering state. This prevents reseeding and spreading. Here are a few methods to control this weed:
  1. Hand-pulling: This classic method involves manually removing the plant from the soil. Make sure to grab small geranium as low as possible to remove the roots, as well. This may require some elbow grease and patience, but it usually gets rid of the problem.
  2. Hoeing: Using a garden hoe, you can cut off small geranium at ground level. This process is efficient for larger areas, albeit typically requires repeated action over time. Always remember to do this before the plant flowers to prevent reseeding.
  3. Solarization: This method is quite interesting. It requires you to cover the invaded area with a clear plastic sheet for 4 to 6 weeks during a hot part of the year. The sun's rays heat the soil under the plastic and eventually kill small geranium.
  4. Organic herbicides: You may also consider using organic herbicides derived from natural materials, like vinegar or citrus oil. Be careful to follow the instructions on the label to avoid damage to other plants.

Water: Small geranium thrives in consistently moist conditions, preferring evenly moist soil without waterlogging. Watering weekly is essential for health. This herbaceous species is versatile for indoor or outdoor cultivation but needs careful attention to watering during its active growing season for optimal growth.
Fertilize: To ensure optimal growth of small geranium, apply a base fertilizer during sowing and supplement with fertilizer 1-2 times in spring during its rapid growth. For outdoor plants, use slow-release fertilizers to maintain soil fertility, and provide balanced liquid fertilizers indoors after initial growth.
Pruning: The small geranium grows slowly and needs minimal trimming. Excessive pruning can hinder its growth and may lead to its death.
Propagation: Small geranium can be propagated by division, creating new plants from mature clumps. To minimize root disturbance, excavate carefully and use a sharp, disinfected tool to divide the root ball. Promptly replant each division with adequate moisture and soil fertility for successful establishment.
