Coastal doghobble
Also known as: Coast leucothoe, Doghobble, Maleberry, Swamp deciduous dog-laurel
This wildflower, coastal doghobble, gets its name from the hunting dogs who became tangled up in its branches. Its Latin name, Leucothoe axillaris refers to leukos, or white and axillaris, which comes from the word axilla, or armpit. This is because the drooping, white bell-shaped blossoms grow out of the ‘armpits’ of this evergreen shrub.

Attributes of Coastal doghobble

Growth Rate
The slow growth rate observed in coastal doghobble manifests most distinctly during spring. Characterized by a gradual expansion of foliage, coastal doghobble delicately increases in height and girth. This unhurried growth promotes dense, lush vegetation, enhancing the plant's resistance to environmental stressors. Additionally, despite a slower pace, this allows the plant to invest more resources into leaf production, ensuing a robust formation ready for photosynthesis. While growth patterns may vary across seasons, the languid growth during spring is indicative of coastal doghobble's survival strategy, aligning growth with favorable environmental conditions to ensure vitality.

Culture

Garden Use
With its decorative evergreen leaves and elegant hanging flower clusters, coastal doghobble can be an excellent specimen shrub or a hedge. It is most commonly planted in woodland gardens, native gardens, and naturalized areas. Also, it can be used to stabilize slopes and riverbanks. The blooms are attractive to butterflies and bees, making coastal doghobble both decorative and useful in wildlife gardens, pollinator gardens, and butterfly gardens.

Soil Type
Water: Coastal doghobble originates from humid environments, thriving in well-drained soils with consistent moisture. It requires watering every 1-2 weeks and needs careful hydration during its active growth phase to maintain foliage and support flowering, making it moderately drought-tolerant yet favoring stable moisture.
Fertilize: Coastal doghobble requires balanced or high nitrogen fertilizers during active growth for optimal health. Fertilize monthly in spring and summer, reducing in fall. Water soil before application and avoid over-fertilization to prevent root damage, especially during winter when nutrient uptake decreases.
Pruning: Coastal doghobble features arching branches and glossy leaves. Prune in late spring, cutting above leaf nodes to maintain shape, remove old or damaged stems, and promote dense growth. Regular pruning improves airflow and light penetration, enhancing the plant's overall vigor.
Propagation: Coastal doghobble propagates best through cuttings in spring and summer, with a moderate difficulty level. Successful propagation is indicated by healthy root development and new leaf growth. Maintaining optimal humidity is crucial to enhance rooting.
Repotting: Repot coastal doghobble every 2-3 years in spring using a slightly larger container than its rootball. Maintain consistent moisture and provide shade to support recovery and vibrant foliage. Gentle care during this period enhances growth and overall health.
