Purple needlegrass
Also known as: Purple tussockgrass
Purple needlegrass (Nassella pulchra) is a perennial grass with needle-like leaves that have a purple tint when in bloom. Though the grass grows about 1 m tall, its extensive root system can dig as much as 6 m below ground. After blooming, the flowers turn to seeds, which are dispersed by the wind. The roots of purple needlegrass provide food for rabbits and rodents.

Attributes of Purple needlegrass

Growth Rate
During its active growing seasons of Spring and Summer, purple needlegrass displays a rapid growth rate, resulting in an intensive developmental phase marked by a stark increase in height. This accelerated growth speed directs resources toward considerable leaf production, and prompts the plant to flower profusely. Interestingly, the growth rate appears to vary, receding in the off-seasons, a phenomenon indicative of purple needlegrass's adaptability to preserve its resources.

Distribution of Purple needlegrass

Distribution Map
Purple needlegrass is a plant primarily indigenous to the western regions of North America. Over time, its presence has expanded beyond its native range, adapting to various climates and locales across the continent.

Water: Purple needlegrass thrives in dry grasslands, requiring modest watering once a week. It efficiently conserves moisture during droughts. As an outdoor plant, its water intake should align with the growing season to ensure robust development during active growth periods.
Fertilize: To support optimal health, purple needlegrass should be fertilized with a balanced-nutrient fertilizer at the start of the growing season, using a quarter of the recommended rate. Avoid fertilization during dormancy, and dilute fertilizers to prevent root burn while ensuring even distribution.
Pruning: Characterized by arching blades and purplish seed heads, purple needlegrass requires early spring pruning to 2-3 inches above the base for vigorous growth and shape maintenance. Removing dead foliage enhances air circulation, reduces disease risk, and boosts ornamental appeal, promoting a healthier, more robust purple needlegrass.
Propagation: Purple needlegrass is a perennial grass from California, found in grasslands. Propagation is done by dividing mature clumps during active growth, ensuring each section has a healthy root system. Keeping soil moisture stable is crucial for successful establishment of new plants.
