Wild madder
Wild madder (Rubia peregrina) is a member of the coffee family and is native to Mediterranean Europe and Africa. It produces greenish-yellow flowers that are insect-pollinated; these flowers then mature into green berries that eventually ripen to black. The genus name “Rubia” is Latin for red, a reference to the fact that some species (notably Rubia tinctorum) have been used to create red dyes.

Water: Wild madder is native to the Mediterranean and thrives in moderate climates with partial drought tolerance. Preferring well-drained soil, it benefits from weekly watering and is evergreen, retaining leaf hydration year-round, making it ideal for outdoor settings with natural rainfall.
Fertilize: Use balanced fertilizers every 6-8 weeks during the growing season for wild madder. Young plants need frequent feeding, while mature wild madder require less. Apply slow-release or liquid fertilizers, ensuring soil moisture beforehand to protect roots, and adjust dosages to prevent nutrient burn.
Pruning: Wild madder features robust growth and whorled leaves. Prune in early to later spring to promote healthy growth, remove dead stems, and thin congested areas for air circulation. Regular pruning enhances flowering and controls wild madder's growth. Clean tools to prevent disease.
Propagation: Propagating wild madder by division maintains its genetic identity. Careful rootball separation and replanting in prepared soil enhance establishment. Gentle handling of roots is essential, followed by immediate watering and care to support vigor, yielding robust offspring due to its strong root system.
