How do I get rid of wild radish?
Wild radish can be very difficult to manage once it establishes, so it is advised to remove it before flowering and fruiting in order to prevent seed production, and consequently the spread of this weedy plant. Wild radish plants are easiest to remove when they are young, so regular garden inspection and weed removal are necessary measures for their control. Mulching: Covering the soil with sawdust, straws, or black mulches during the seed stage can effectively inhibit seed germination and growth of the seedling. Generally, this method is used in winter or spring to inhibit the germination of seeds in the soil. If the weeds have already flowered and bore fruit, this method can be used to prevent the seeds to reach the soil, reducing the level of infestation significantly in the next growing season. Pulling out: Pull the plants from the soil using adequate tools before the plants bear fruit. If the soil is dry, add water to make it softer and dig out the plant more efficiently. Deep tillage can be performed to remove the remaining roots. This method has shown to be especially effective for weeds that are in seedling stage or low growing size. Pruning: Pruning wild radish plants before they bear fruit can effectively prevent them from reoccurring, especially if they are annuals. If biennials are in question, pruning should be performed the following year too. Plowing: Before planting crops or other plants, plow the soil (at least 20 cm deep), collect the plant roots, leave them exposed to the sun or bury them deeply. Discarded plant material can be added to the plant mix for making organic fertilizer and compost. Chemical control: There are many available herbicides for wild radish control. Make sure to read and follow the application instructions carefully, and spray on a windless day to avoid negative effects on non-target species
