Virginia threeseed mercury is native to North America, where it will often root in disturbed habitats such as woodlands and thickets. It has been recorded as invasive in six countries: France, Italy, Portugal, Croatia, Slovenia, and Switzerland. The weed is considered poisonous to humans due to its sap. Virginia threeseed mercury reseeds itself and consequently spreads quickly. In Connecticut, it has been listed as a species of special concern. When necessary, virginia threeseed mercury should be treated with chemical herbicides to control growth. It can also be mechanically pulled or treated with mulch to obscure the sunlight it needs to grow.
