Weed Control

Tall flatsedge is considered an invasive and noxious weed both in the US and around the world. Having originated from the western US, tall flatsedge has spread to other states and across the world, to countries like Japan, Australia, and most of Europe. In Japan, tall flatsedge poses a serious threat in rice fields, where it competes with cultivated plants. In Australia, the plant is listed as a moderately invasive species and is troublesome in irrigation channels, canals, and damp environments. Cold temperatures will help control the weed’s spread, but the seeds can survive freezing temperatures.
How to Control It
The most effective season for removing tall flatsedge is late spring to early summer. The plant needs to be removed before it starts producing seeds to prevent further infestation. Here are several organic or interesting methods for controlling or removing tall flatsedge:
  1. Hand pulling: Moist the soil to loosen it, then grasp tall flatsedge from the base, and gently pull it out, making sure the whole root system is removed.
  2. Solarization: During the hottest period of summer, cover the infested area with a clear plastic tarp. The heat generated under the tarp will kill tall flatsedge and its seeds.
  3. Mulching: Cover the soil around your plants with a thick layer of mulch (at least 3 inches). This will block light and hinder tall flatsedge growth.
  4. Biocontrol: Introduce natural enemies of tall flatsedge, such as specific insects or other organisms, to control its growth. Consult with a local extension service to identify local biocontrol agents.
  5. Vinegar Spray: Create a solution of 10% vinegar and 90% water and spray it directly onto the tall flatsedge. Be careful not to spray it on other plants as the solution can harm them.

Water: Tall flatsedge thrives in moist environments, requiring consistent moisture and weekly watering. It has moderate drought tolerance and benefits from rainwater during the growing season. As an herbaceous perennial, it is commonly grown outdoors, aligning well with its natural habitat's water needs.
Fertilize: Tall flatsedge requires minimal fertilization, needing only small amounts of standard-strength fertilizer monthly during active growth. Compared to similar-sized plants, tall flatsedge has lower nutrient needs.
Pruning: In fall, cut back dead stems of tall flatsedge to prevent diseases. Prune carefully, as cutting leaflets causes brown tips that can't be corrected by further cutting. Allow brown tips to outgrow naturally as the plant develops.
Propagation: Tall flatsedge is primarily propagated via division in Spring and Autumn. This method is easy, with new growth emerging after successful division. For best results, ensure proper separation of the root systems.
Repotting: Tall flatsedge thrives in moist conditions and should be repotted every 2-3 years, ideally in early spring. Use a wide, shallow pot to accommodate its clumping form. Ensure consistent moisture and avoid direct sunlight post-repotting to help roots establish effectively.
