Tall flatsedge is considered an invasive and noxious weed both in the US and around the world. Having originated from the western US, tall flatsedge has spread to other states and across the world, to countries like Japan, Australia, and most of Europe. In Japan, tall flatsedge poses a serious threat in rice fields, where it competes with cultivated plants. In Australia, the plant is listed as a moderately invasive species and is troublesome in irrigation channels, canals, and damp environments. Cold temperatures will help control the weed’s spread, but the seeds can survive freezing temperatures.
