Weed Control

Arrasa con todo, commonly known as Gomphrena serrata or 'Arrasa con todo', originates from tropical America, including regions of Central and South America. This plant is classified as a weed due to a compelling set of reasons. Its ability to reproduce rapidly and survive in adverse conditions makes it a nuisance. Arrasa con todo produces a high number of seeds which allows it to swiftly colonize lawns and gardens. Moreover, it is resilient to common weed control methods, adding to its weedy nature. It can cause significant harm to gardens as it outcompetes desired plants for nutrients, light, and space, leading to their suffocation and eventual demise. The main method of propagation for arrasa con todo is through seed spread. It employs wind, water, and animal movement to disperse its seeds across vast distances, allowing it to quickly invade new territories.
How to Control It
The best season for removal of arrasa con todo is late spring or early summer, which is when the plant is actively growing but has not yet begun to produce seeds. This is the time when removal efforts will be the most effective. Here are some organic or interesting methods for removing this plant:
  1. Hand pulling: This is the simplest method. Wear a pair of gardening gloves, grasp arrasa con todo at the base of the stem, and tug it out of the ground gently. This method is best used after a rain, when the ground is soft and roots are easier to extract.
  2. Smothering: This method involves putting down a layer of newspaper or cardboard over the area where arrasa con todo is growing, and then covering that with a layer of mulch. This blocks sunlight, which the plant needs to grow, effectively killing it.
  3. Solarization: In this method, you would clear the area of arrasa con todo, water it well, and then cover it with a clear, plastic tarp. The sun heats up the soil to high temperatures, killing arrasa con todo. This process can take several weeks during the hottest part of the summer.
  4. Vinegar spray: Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and spray it directly onto arrasa con todo. The vinegar's acidity can kill small plants. Do not spray vinegar on plants you want to keep as it can harm them too.

Water: Arrasa con todo thrives in well-drained soil and benefits from periodic deep watering, ideally once a week. Its drought tolerance stems from adaptation to wet and dry cycles. Consistent soil moisture is crucial during the active growing season for optimal growth and flowering.
Fertilize: Arrasa con todo thrives in nutritionally-poor soil, making fertilizer optional. However, applying a water-soluble fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season can promote larger, more vibrant blooms.
Pruning: Pruning arrasa con todo is straightforward and ideal in early spring. Remove damaged or overly dense branches, and pinch branch tips monthly to promote bushier growth.
