Weed Control

White morning-glory is native to North America and has been frequently cultivated for ornamental purposes. It is not listed as invasive at the state or federal level in the United States. It grows in disturbed areas such as along streams, ditches, and roads. White morning-glory also grows by sprawling stems that can smother other vegetation. These characteristics can allow it to become weedy in some contexts, including agricultural fields. They also act as alternative hosts for some agricultural pests. Repeated application of herbicides can effectively control white morning-glory. Plants can also be hand-pulled, dug from the roots, or covered with thick mulch.
How to Control It
The best time to manage white morning-glory infestations is early spring through fall. White morning-glory should ideally be eliminated before it matures to prevent it from spreading seeds. Here are some methods to control this weed:
  1. Hand Pulling: Wear protective gloves and manually uproot white morning-glory. Dispose of the pulled-out plants in a sealed bag to prevent any seeds from scattering around.
  2. Deep Digging: If the infestation is too large for hand pulling, a shovel can be used. Dig deep around the white morning-glory to ensure you get the whole root system. Again, dispose of the plants properly.
  3. Smothering: Cover the area with a thick layer of newspaper or cardboard, then add a layer of mulch. The lack of sunlight will eventually kill the white morning-glory. This method works best for large infestations.
  4. Vinegar Spray: Fill a spray bottle with vinegar and a little dish soap. Spray this mix on the white morning-glory during a hot sunny day. The acetic acid in the vinegar will destroy the plant tissues causing it to die off.
  5. Bio-control: There are certain insects or pathogens that feed on white morning-glory, controlling its growth. Research local bio-control options and consider introducing them to your garden.

Care Guide for White morning-glory

Water: White morning-glory flourishes in moist environments, requiring consistent hydration and evenly moist soil. It shows moderate drought tolerance and needs weekly watering for optimal vitality. Typically grown outdoors, white morning-glory demonstrates vigorous growth reliant on adequate water for its lush foliage.
Fertilize: White morning-glory requires consistent fertilization, especially during seedlings and growing seasons. Apply a small amount of organic fertilizer initially, supplement with nitrogen when repotting (6-8 weeks before spring frosts), and use water-soluble fertilizers monthly. Introduce phosphate and potassium during early flowering for best results.
Pruning: White morning-glory exhibits rapid growth; therefore, prune diseased and weak branches during winter dormancy. This practice enhances ventilation, prevents excessive density, and mitigates the risk of pests and diseases.
Propagation: To propagate white morning-glory, sow seeds in spring under appropriate light and moisture. This method is moderately challenging; monitor for emerging seedlings to ensure success.
