Prairie rose
Also known as: Dwarf Prairie Rose, Prairie wild rose
Prairie rose (Rosa arkansana) is a species that’s indigenous to central North America. It has the distinction of being the official flower of two U.S. states: North Dakota and Iowa. Its deep and extensive roots help it to survive prolonged periods without rain, as well as all-consuming wildfires. This adaptation accounted for the fact that it was one of the few species that thrived during the droughts that plagued the American Dust Bowl in the 1930s.

Water: Prairie rose thrives in moderate water conditions typical of North American prairies, preferring dry to average humidity. Watering should occur every 1-2 weeks, allowing soil to dry slightly. Resilient across climates, prairie rose requires less water during dormancy in colder seasons.
Fertilize: For optimal vitality, prairie rose benefits from quarterly balanced fertilizer applications during growing seasons, enhancing bloom quality and robustness. Use granular, time-release formulas, adjusting frequency based on growth phases. Apply as top-dressing, avoid direct contact with foliage, and water thoroughly after application for best results.
Pruning: Prairie rose features vibrant blooms and resilient growth. Pruning involves removing dead stems, thinning crowded areas, and cutting back in early spring to encourage flowering and minimize disease. Regular pruning enhances shape and health, aligning with reputable horticultural practices.
Propagation: Prairie rose is a deciduous sub-shrub known for its fragrant pink flowers. Propagation involves collecting and drying hips, extracting seeds, and cold stratifying them. Sow seeds in well-draining soil with adequate sunlight, maintaining moist, fertile conditions and regular pruning for optimal growth.
Repotting: Ensure prairie rose has excellent drainage when planted in pots to promote healthy growth and prevent root rot.
