Prairie rose (Rosa arkansana) is a species that’s indigenous to central North America. It has the distinction of being the official flower of two U.S. states: North Dakota and Iowa. Its deep and extensive roots help it to survive prolonged periods without rain, as well as all-consuming wildfires. This adaptation accounted for the fact that it was one of the few species that thrived during the droughts that plagued the American Dust Bowl in the 1930s.
