Slender speedwell
Also known as: Round-leaved speedwell, Whetzel weed
Slender speedwell is a perennial herb whose hairy stems form small nodes. When the nodes touch the ground, new roots form. This Eurasian native was introduced into the United States in the early 1920’s and has since become a nuisance weed in lawns. In Ireland, sewing the plant into a traveler’s clothing was thought to bring them good luck.

Weed Control

Slender speedwell originates from the Caucasus region of Eastern Europe. Often considered a weed, its competitive nature for resources allows it to overrun other plants. It can be very harmful to gardens as it rapidly consumes nutrients, leaving little for other plants. This weed's striking ability to reproduce both sexually, through the production of seeds, and vegetatively, through the spreading of stolons, makes it a persistent problem. These stolons, or horizontal stems, allow it to spread easily across the surface of the soil, providing it a significant advantage against less invasive species. In addition, the ability to produce numerous seeds that get easily distributed by wind or water exacerbates its invasiveness, allowing it to dominate a wide area relatively quickly.
How to Control It
The best season to remove slender speedwell is during spring or early summer before it has a chance to flower and set seed. Here are a few organic methods for controlling or removing this plant:
  1. Hand Pulling: Ensure to wear gloves to protect your hands. Grasp the plant at its base near the soil surface and slowly pull upward to remove the roots. Repeat this process until all the plants are removed. This method works best when the soil is damp.
  2. Smothering: Lay a thick layer of newspaper or cardboard over the area where the plant is growing. Wet it down and cover it with a thin layer of soil or compost. Leave it for a few weeks. The lack of sunlight will cause the plant to die.
  3. Solarization: This involves covering the area where the plant is growing with a clear plastic tarp during the hottest months of the year. The heat from the sun will kill the plant and its seeds. Ensure the tarp is tightly sealed around the edges. Leave it on for 4-6 weeks.

Water: Native to moist meadows in Eurasia, slender speedwell thrives in consistently moist environments. It prefers well-hydrated soil and tolerates brief dry spells. Weekly watering is essential for optimal growth, particularly during its active growing season when adequate soil moisture is crucial.
Fertilize: Slender speedwell requires minimal fertilization; a small dose of water-soluble fertilizer with a 20-10-20 ratio is needed during growth. To enhance flowering, apply a 10-30-20 ratio fertilizer 10-15 days prior. Reduce fertilization in early fall and avoid during root recovery to prevent damage.
Pruning: Slender speedwell's withered flowers do not drop naturally and should be removed to improve appearance and conserve nutrients. Prune in the morning on dry days by cutting near the last flower, promoting growth. After winter, prune yellowed parts above ground to encourage new growth.
Propagation: Slender speedwell propagates via division, sowing, and cuttage. For division, select a 2-3 year-old plant in mid-spring, ensuring 6-8 buds per cluster. Use carbendazim for disinfection. Cuttage occurs in late spring or summer; keep soil moist until roots develop for transplanting.
