Weed Control

Gray field speedwell originated from Europe and Asia. It is a weed that can cause a significant nuisance in gardens due to its resilience and rapid expanding capabilities. This small flowering plant reproduces by seeds and has a persistent nature that enables it to resist control techniques. It is competent in invading landscapes, and due to its competitiveness, native plants struggle to thrive. This weed is harmful as it monopolizes resources such as light, space, water, and nutrients, stifling the growth of desired plants in a garden. Gray field speedwell primarily spreads via its seeds, which can be carried by the wind, water, or animals, allowing for swift and far-reaching dispersion. The plant's quick germination and establishment make its control in gardens particularly challenging.
How to Control It
The best season for the removal of gray field speedwell is during late winter and early spring, before it begins to flower and spread its seeds. Following are the three organic methods for managing this plant:
  1. Hand Pulling: Wet the ground around the plant to loosen the soil. Carefully grasp the stem at ground level and slowly pull upward to remove the entire plant, roots and all.
  2. Soil Solarization: Clear the area of all desired vegetation and cover with a clear plastic tarp. Let the area sit in the hot sun for 4 to 6 weeks. The heat will penetrate the soil, killing the gray field speedwell seeds.
  3. Smothering: Lay a thick layer of newspaper or cardboard over the area where the gray field speedwell is growing, and cover that layer with a 3-inch layer of mulch. Leave it for a season, this will block sunlight and smother the plant.

Care Guide for Gray field speedwell

Water: Gray field speedwell thrives in temperate regions, preferring consistent soil moisture without waterlogging. Weekly watering maintains hydration, and outdoor cultivation benefits from natural rainfall. This balance ensures adequate moisture during its growth cycles, supporting its overall health and development.
Fertilize: Gray field speedwell requires minimal fertilization, with a preference for water-soluble fertilizers. During growth, use a 20-10-20 ratio; promote flowering with a 10-30-20 ratio 10-15 days prior. Reduce fertilization in early fall and avoid during recovery due to weak nutrient absorption.
Pruning: Gray field speedwell retains withered flowers, which should be removed promptly for better appearance and nutrient efficiency. Prune on sunny mornings to manage flowering, with a 20-day recovery period post-pruning. In early spring, cut back yellowed growth to encourage fresh growth as temperatures rise above 0℃ (32℉).
Propagation: Gray field speedwell propagates through division, sowing, and cuttage. Division is best in mid-spring, using 2- to 3-year-old plants. Use a sharp knife for clusters retaining 6-8 buds. Cuttage is done in late spring or summer, keeping soil moist for rooting before transplanting.
