Is variable flatsedge a weed?
Variable flatsedge is a perennial sedge that grows in shallow waters. It is commonly found in habitats like riverbanks, wetlands, mangroves, swamps, cultivated land, as well as pond, stream and lake margins. It thrives in very moist, fertile soil, but can also tolerate poor soils. Variable flatsedge produces inconspicuous greenish flowers that turn brown as they mature. A single plant can produce up to 50 000 seeds according to some sources. The seeds are most commonly dispersed with the help of water currents. Variable flatsedge can grow very fast and form dense colonies, quickly invading an area and displacing other vegetation. Its dense mats aggressively compete for space, water and nutrients with other plants. Presence of variable flatsedge in certain crops can cause yield losses that can sometimes be quite severe. For this reason, this plant is considered a weed in many parts of the world.
