Tuberous pea can be used as famine food in areas where food is scarce, but it's not safe for prolonged consumption as it contain the toxic amino acid beta-aminoproprionitrite. This compound causes neurological and musculoskeletal problems. Symptoms of tuberous pea poisoning may include the inability to move the lower limbs and general weakness due to neural damage. A less frequent, but typical symptom is the atrophy of gluteal muscles.
